Slide is a backup, continuity, and disaster-recovery (BCDR) platform for MSPs — backup appliances ("Slides"), the agents they protect, snapshots, and the recovery workflows (file restores, image exports, and bootable recovery virtual machines) built on top of them. StackJack talks to Slide through the Slide public API.
Connecting Slide to StackJack gives your AI assistant a broad family of slide_ MCP tools — MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools are the standardized commands an AI assistant can call through StackJack. With them, your AI can:
- Inventory clients, devices (appliances), agents, snapshots, and backups across your fleet
- Investigate alerts and the audit log — who did what, and what needs attention
- Recover (on Pro plans) — start backups, mount file restores and push files back, export disk images, and boot recovery virtual machines
- Manage (on Pro plans) recovery networks, including IPsec tunnels, port forwards, and WireGuard peers, plus device VLANs and power state
How StackJack authenticates to Slide
Slide uses a single user-based API token. You create and manage it in the Slide Console, and StackJack sends it on every request as an Authorization: Bearer credential. There is no client ID, sign-in redirect, or refresh-token flow. Slide's current public documentation does not publish a fixed expiration or guaranteed lifetime for API tokens, so monitor the connection and replace the token if Slide invalidates or revokes it.
The token inherits the permissions of the Slide account it belongs to — everything your AI can see or change in Slide is bounded by what that account can. A 403 from a tool means the account lacks that permission, not a StackJack-side block.
Slide is a global service with one address (https://api.slide.tech) — there are no regional endpoints, so there is no region to choose.
Before you begin
- In StackJack: you need a role that can manage connectors (tenant Owner, a co-owner, or an Administrator).
- In Slide: you need a Slide user that can create an API token and has only the role/permissions StackJack should inherit. For organization-wide automation, prefer a dedicated integration user over a personal administrator.
Step 1 — Create an API token in the Slide Console
- Sign in to the Slide Console and go to Settings → API.
- Create a new API token. Slide's public docs do not promise a fixed expiration; manage and revoke tokens from this page.
- Copy the token immediately and store it securely — treat it like a password. Anyone with the token can read and act on your Slide account.
Step 2 — Add the credential in StackJack
- In the StackJack portal, open Connectors.
- Select the Slide card. Choose How To Connect for the inline checklist or Configure to enter the token.
- Paste your API token. There is no client ID or URL to enter — the address is fixed.
- Click Save.
What happens when you save
- The token is stored encrypted in Azure Key Vault — never in the StackJack database, and never shown back to you.
- If this is the first time you configure Slide, a Free-tier subscription for the connector is created automatically so its Free tools work right away.
- StackJack validates without changing Slide data by calling
GET /v1/device?limit=1. - A successful probe shows Connected. A failed probe preserves the credential and shows Needs Attention with Slide's error and a Re-test action.
Pagination
Slide list tools use offset and limit. The API defaults to 10 items and caps a page at 50; StackJack clamps out-of-range limits to a valid value. Read the response's pagination.next_offset and pass that value as the next call's offset. If next_offset is absent, the list is complete.
Do not calculate the next page from a total count. Slide removed pagination.total from resource-list responses in API v1.19.6; next_offset is the supported continuation signal.
Plans and available tools
- Free includes reads across accounts, users, clients, alerts, the audit log, agents (including file search), devices and their networks and VLANs, backups, snapshots, file restores, image exports, recovery virtual machines, and networks.
- Pro adds account/alert settings updates, client and agent lifecycle actions, device power and network/VLAN changes, and recovery actions — start a backup, create and push file restores, export images, boot and delete recovery VMs, and manage recovery networks (IPsec / port-forward / WireGuard).
- Business offers the same tool set as Pro with a higher monthly call quota.
See the generated Slide tool reference for the current inventory, plan assignment, input schemas, and destructive-action labels.
Slide has no per-user sign-in for the API (the token is a single account credential), so all AI traffic authenticates as that one token — there is no per-user attribution. Current pricing and quotas are shown in the portal's Billing page and at checkout.
A note on recovery actions. Several Pro tools change live infrastructure — pairing an agent, powering a device off or rebooting it, starting a backup, pushing recovered files onto a protected system, exporting an image, or booting a recovery virtual machine. Deleting clients, passphrases, VLANs, restores, exports, recovery VMs, networks, and network rules can remove working recovery configuration. StackJack marks these operations destructive or sensitive. Whether your AI application asks you to confirm before running one depends on that application's own settings — see Destructive tools and confirmation. Review those settings, and scope access with the MCP Setup tool selections and the Permissions page.
Power-off has no remote undo. Powering off a Slide appliance stops backups and restores, and the API has no matching remote power-on operation. Confirm someone can physically restore power before approving that tool.
Eventual consistency. Slide is eventually consistent: a resource you just created or changed may take a moment to become readable. Your AI shouldn't assume a write is visible on the very next read — a brief "not found" right after a create usually resolves on a retry a moment later.
Rate limits
Slide gives each API token a pool of 50 requests, refilled at 10 requests per second. Exceeding it returns HTTP 429 with err_rate_limit_exceeded; Slide recommends waiting and using exponential backoff. StackJack adds an aggregate pace of 500 requests per minute and records a short backoff when Slide returns 429. Large or parallel fleet reads can still exhaust the burst pool, so reduce concurrency rather than immediately replaying the same burst.
Rotating or replacing the token
The API token is the recovery secret. If you revoke the token in the Slide Console — or it is otherwise invalidated — the stored credential stops working. To restore access, mint a new token in Settings → API, then open Connectors → Slide → Configure in StackJack, paste the new token, and Save.
Disconnecting Slide
Use Disconnect in the Slide drawer to remove StackJack's stored token and stop future Slide API calls. Disconnecting does not revoke the token in Slide and does not undo backups, restores, exports, virtual machines, network changes, or device actions already started. Revoke the token separately in Slide Console → Settings → API if it should no longer work anywhere.
For a Free subscription, the confirmation can also remove Slide tools from tool lists. A paid connector plan remains separate billing state; use Manage on Billing on the connector card if you also want to end it — it opens this connector's removal dialog on the Billing page. A legacy website subscription reads Cancel Plan instead.
