AbleSign is a digital signage platform. It runs screens in lobbies, shops and offices from a web CMS: each screen plays a playlist of images, videos, PDFs and web pages, screens can share a playlist as a screen group, and operating hours switch them on and off. StackJack talks to AbleSign through its REST API, which AbleSign marks as beta.

Connecting AbleSign to StackJack gives your AI assistant a family of ablesign_ MCP tools. MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools are the standardized commands an AI assistant can call through StackJack. With them, your AI can:

  • See the screens - every screen with its orientation, last check-in time, player version and tags, one screen's full settings and operating hours, and a screen's playlist
  • Work with screen groups - the groups, their member screens and their shared playlist
  • Browse the media library - folders, images, videos and PDFs with their dates and tags, and one file's details
  • See the web apps - the web pages and HTML content shown on screens
  • Read the workspaces - every workspace with its counts, and the users of a workspace with their roles
  • Report proof of play - what played where, how often and for how long
  • Change signage (on Pro plans) - register screens, change screen settings and operating hours, save or edit playlists, set group members, upload or replace media in one step, create and update folders, web apps and workspaces, and delete

How StackJack authenticates to AbleSign

AbleSign uses an API key. The key starts with ak_ and alone authenticates every call: there is no client ID, no sign-in and nothing to refresh. The address is fixed, so there is no URL to enter.

Creating the API key

  1. Sign in to the AbleSign CMS.
  2. Go to Account Settings, then API Keys, and create a key. It starts with ak_.
  3. Copy the key. Treat it like a password.

Connect it in StackJack

  1. Open Connectors, then AbleSign.
  2. Paste the key into API Key.
  3. Click Test connection. StackJack lists your workspaces to prove the key works, and changes nothing.

Paste the key again whenever you save the connection, including when you only rename it.

What is worth knowing before you start

Which workspace a tool acts on

If your account has several workspaces, tools act on the default workspace unless the agent names another one. The AbleSign workspaces tool lists them with their ids, and every screen, group, folder, media, web app and proof-of-play tool takes an optional workspace id. One key reaches every workspace of the organization.

Changes reach your screens

Playlist changes reach your screens within a few minutes, so every change to what a screen shows is marked destructive and asks for approval before it runs:

  • Playlists: saving a whole playlist (items left out are removed), adding items and editing an item's duration, transition or schedule, on a screen or on a screen group
  • Screens: registering a screen (it binds the device to your account), changing a screen's settings such as orientation, fit or sync, and changing its operating hours
  • Screen groups: setting a group's members (screens left out leave the group, and an empty list removes them all)
  • Media files and web apps: changing their start and expiry dates or a web app's address, and replacing a file's content (it keeps its id, and the old content cannot be restored)
  • Every delete

Creating a screen group, a folder, a web app or a workspace, renaming a screen group, a folder or a workspace, and uploading a new media file are not marked destructive: nothing new plays until a playlist includes it.

Uploading media in one step

AbleSign uploads a file in three steps: it hands out a temporary storage address, the file is sent there, and the upload is completed. An AI assistant cannot send a file to that address itself, so StackJack offers two one-step tools: one uploads a new image, video or PDF, the other replaces an existing file's content. Give the file as base64 or as an https link StackJack downloads, up to 25 MB, and name its type: JPEG, PNG, MP4 or PDF. StackJack keeps no copy of the file and never shows the storage address. The three raw steps are also available as separate tools.

Rate limits

AbleSign allows 500 requests every 5 minutes for each API key, counted across everything that uses the key. It also limits changes to one item: 15 playlist changes a minute per screen or group, 5 replacements, web app updates or member changes a minute per item, and 200 uploads a day per organization. StackJack paces its requests and backs off when AbleSign asks it to; a limit that is reached is reported with the time to wait.

Proof-of-play reports

Only screens with proof of play turned on report plays. The raw records need a start and an end date at most 92 days apart; the summaries can cover everything AbleSign still keeps. AbleSign keeps records for a limited time, so export them regularly if you need a long history.

When AbleSign refuses a call

  • The API key is rejected: the key is wrong or was deleted. Create a new one under Account Settings, then API Keys, and paste it in.
  • Not found: check the id with the matching list tool. Ids belong to a workspace, so name the workspace if the item is not in the default one.
  • A workspace cannot be deleted: the default workspace, and a workspace that still has users, screens, media files or web apps, cannot be deleted.
  • The edge refused the request: AbleSign's network edge sometimes refuses a request before the API sees it. That is not the key, and it is not counted against the connection; try again later.

Lists come in pages

Lists return 25 items by default and up to 200 per call, with an offset to page through the rest.

Plans and limits

Read tools are available on the Free tier. Everything that registers, changes, uploads or deletes is Pro. Business reaches the same tools as Pro and differs by monthly call quota.
