ScalePad is a lifecycle and client-success platform for MSPs. StackJack connects to five ScalePad products through one API key: Core (the shared client and asset records), Lifecycle Manager (hardware and SaaS lifecycles, strategic roadmaps, QBR deliverables), ControlMap (multi-client compliance), Quoter (quoting), and Backup Radar (backup monitoring). Backup Radar's own API is covered too, with its own Backup Radar key, so your AI can read individual backup jobs and their results, not only client-level health.
Connecting ScalePad gives your AI assistant a broad family of scalepad_ MCP tools — MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools are the standardized commands an AI assistant can call through StackJack. With them, your AI can:
- See the whole book of business — clients, contacts, members, hardware and SaaS assets, service contracts, tickets, sites, opportunities, and your product catalog
- Work the lifecycle — hardware lifecycles and replacement planning, initiatives, goals, meetings, action items, notes, assessments, contracts, and budgets
- Build and share deliverables — assemble QBR documents from templates, refresh their live sections, and manage the share links you send to clients
- Run compliance — client health, controls, evidence and evidence requests, risks, policies, procedures, governance documents, and framework objectives across every client at once
- Quote — quotes and quote authoring, templates, catalog items, item groups, options, tiers, manufacturers, suppliers, and SupplierSync data feeds
- Watch backups — client backup-health history and backup-device monitoring, plus the individual backup jobs: the backup list with its filters, one backup's detail and its parsed results, the inactive and retired lists, and your tenant-wide overview counts
- Export — budget forecasts, roadmaps, initiative and deliverable PDFs, delivered as a private download link
- Act (on Pro plans) — create, update, and delete records; attach and detach the links between goals, initiatives, meetings, and action items; upload compliance documents
How StackJack authenticates to ScalePad
ScalePad uses a single personal API key — there is no OAuth login and nothing to refresh. One key covers every ScalePad product you are subscribed to.
The backup-job tools need their own key. The tools that read the backup list and its filters, one backup's detail and its parsed results, the inactive and retired lists, and the overview counts call Backup Radar's own API directly rather than going through ScalePad, and that API does not accept your ScalePad key. If you use those tools, copy the API key from your Backup Radar portal and enter it in Backup Radar classic API key on the Backup Radar tab of the setup form. Backup Radar's health and device tools go through ScalePad and use your ScalePad key (or the optional Backup Radar API key, if you set one).
The key belongs to a specific ScalePad user, and that matters more than it first appears: the key stops working if that user is deactivated or loses Administrator permission. If every ScalePad tool starts failing at once, check the person before you check the key.
Keys also expire — two years from creation unless you chose a different date. Note the date somewhere you will see it, because ScalePad does not renew it for you and an expired key fails everything at once.
What decides whether a tool works
Two things (plus, for the backup-job tools, their own key, described above), and they are easy to confuse:
- Your product subscriptions. Any paid ScalePad plan unlocks Core, ControlMap, and Quoter. Lifecycle Manager needs Lifecycle Manager Pro or higher. Backup Radar needs its own active subscription. A tool for a product you don't hold returns a clear "subscription required" message — the key is fine.
- Your region. Each ScalePad account is provisioned in one region and its data stays there.
Regions
StackJack shows a Region choice. Pick the region where your ScalePad account lives:
Core, Lifecycle Manager, and Quoter are United States only — StackJack always reaches them on the US gateway, whatever region you pick, so a European ControlMap tenant does not break them.
Choosing the wrong region does not look like an error. A ScalePad gateway will not serve another region's data, so the wrong choice makes your account look empty rather than showing a sign-in failure. There is no self-service way to look your region up yet; if you are unsure, ask your ScalePad administrator or ScalePad support.
If one product lives in a different region
Because only ControlMap and Backup Radar are offered outside the United States, some MSPs have their compliance data in one region and everything else in the US. That is a separate ScalePad account, so it may have its own API key.
StackJack handles this without a second connector: fill in the optional ControlMap or Backup Radar key and region on the setup form. Leave them blank — which is the normal case — and the main key and region are used for every ScalePad product. The backup-job tools still need the Backup Radar classic API key described above, and they follow the same Backup Radar region.
Before you begin
- In StackJack: you need a role that can manage connectors (tenant Owner, a co-owner, or an Administrator).
- In ScalePad: you need an active user with Administrator permission — only such a user can see the API tab and create keys.
- For the backup-job tools: the API key from your Backup Radar portal.
- Know your region. Confirm it with your ScalePad administrator or ScalePad support if you are not certain.
ScalePad maintains the authoritative API getting-started guide, product and subscription matrix, and regional endpoint matrix. Check its API changelog before building a long-lived workflow around a particular response field.
Step 1 — Create an API key in ScalePad
- Sign in to ScalePad as an active user with Administrator permission.
- Open your personal API key page.
- Select New API key, give it a name (for example,
StackJack), and choose an expiration date. The default is two years. - Generate the key and copy the secret immediately — ScalePad shows it once.
Step 2 — Add the credentials in StackJack
- In StackJack, go to Connectors and find the ScalePad card.
- Click Configure.
- Paste your key into API Key.
- Choose your Region.
- If you use the backup-job tools, open the Backup Radar tab and enter the API key from your Backup Radar portal in Backup Radar classic API key. Leave the other ControlMap and Backup Radar fields blank unless one of those products is hosted in a different region from the rest of your account.
- Click Save. StackJack stores the key, runs a read-only validation, and leaves the connector drawer open so you can see the resulting status. A validation failure does not discard the saved credential: the drawer shows Needs Attention and lets you re-test after correcting the key, owner, subscription, or region.
Validation performs a single read against a product your region serves — Core for a US primary region, or ControlMap outside the US. It confirms the key without changing anything. It does not check the Backup Radar classic API key; the first backup-job tool call is what tries that key.
What your AI can do
Read tools are available on the Free plan. Tools that create, update, or delete anything require Pro. Business plans get the same tools as Pro with a higher monthly call allowance.
See the generated ScalePad tool reference for the current inventory, plan assignment, input schemas, and destructive-action labels.
Anything that removes something is marked as destructive. That covers deleting records, detaching one record from another, unlinking compliance evidence from a control or risk, unassigning clients from a group, and archiving. Whether your AI application asks you to confirm before running one depends on that application's own settings — see Destructive tools and confirmation. Review those settings, and restrict the tools you grant, before you allow removals. Two are worth calling out because their effect reaches your clients directly:
- Regenerating or revoking a deliverable share link immediately breaks any link you already sent a client.
- Archiving an evidence request removes it from the active compliance workflow.
Report exports (budget forecasts, roadmaps, initiative and deliverable PDFs) come back as a private download link valid for 30 minutes by default, not as the file itself — StackJack downloads the vendor response into private blob storage and issues that short-lived, read-only link so large PDFs and spreadsheets stay out of the conversation.
Pagination and changing data
ScalePad list endpoints use cursor-based pagination. Your AI can continue with the returned cursor, but the pages are not an atomic snapshot: a record created or changed during a long traversal can be skipped, and a record can rarely appear twice. For audits or exports that must represent one instant, narrow the query and record when it ran rather than treating a multi-page result as a database transaction.
Rate limits
ScalePad allows 50 requests every 5 seconds per API key, shared across all five products. StackJack paces its own requests below that and waits the exact delay ScalePad asks for if the limit is ever hit, so you should not need to think about it. If you do see rate-limit messages, it usually means several ScalePad-heavy tasks are running at once — narrowing list requests with filters is more effective than paging through everything.
Backup Radar's own API, which the backup-job tools call, is stricter: one request every half second per key. StackJack spaces those calls out for you, so several backup-job requests made at once run one after another instead of being refused, which can make a large burst take several seconds. A burst that would have to wait more than about 30 seconds is sent without waiting, and Backup Radar may ask the extra requests to retry.
Troubleshooting
Every ScalePad tool fails with an authentication error. Check the person, not just the key: is the ScalePad user who created it still active, and do they still have Administrator permission? Losing either stops their keys working. Then check the key has not passed its expiration date. Create a fresh key from an active Administrator, update it in StackJack, save, and select Re-test.
The backup-job tools say Backup Radar (classic) is not configured. No Backup Radar classic API key is stored. The backup-job tools call Backup Radar's own API, which does not accept your ScalePad key, so StackJack sends nothing until that key is saved. In Backup Radar, open Settings > API Keys and add a key, then on the ScalePad card open the Backup Radar tab, enter it in Backup Radar classic API key, save, and call the tool again.
The backup-job tools fail with an authentication error, but the other ScalePad tools work. Backup Radar's own API rejected the stored Backup Radar classic API key. The key is wrong, expired or deleted, or it belongs to a Backup Radar account in the other region. Generate a new key in Backup Radar (Settings > API Keys), then on the ScalePad card open the Backup Radar tab, enter it in Backup Radar classic API key, check the Backup Radar region on the same tab, save, and call the tool again.
One product's tools say a subscription is required. That product is not on your ScalePad plan. Lifecycle Manager needs Lifecycle Manager Pro or higher; Backup Radar needs its own subscription; any paid plan covers Core, ControlMap, and Quoter.
Tools succeed but everything comes back empty. This is almost always the wrong region. A ScalePad gateway will not return another region's data, and it reports that as "nothing found" rather than as an error. Confirm your region with your ScalePad administrator or ScalePad support and re-select it in the connector.
Backup Radar tools say Backup Radar is not available in your region. ScalePad hosts Backup Radar in the United States and Europe only — not in Canada or Australia. If your Backup Radar account is in one of the two supported regions, set the Backup Radar region on the setup form. The same region setting covers both the ScalePad Backup Radar tools and the backup-job tools that call Backup Radar directly.
A single record is not found, but everything else works. That is an ordinary not-found: the record was deleted, or the id came from a different client than the one you are querying. Re-run the matching list or search tool to get a current id.
Removing the connector did not revoke the key. Deleting a connector in StackJack does not delete anything in ScalePad. If you want the key fully revoked, delete it from your ScalePad API key page too.
